Let’s talk about Shakilla, shall we ?

In a country where mothers are literally boiling stones to dupe their kids to fall asleep without eating while leaders are actively shifting goalposts on where funds meant for Covid-19 disappeared to, one shouldnʻt really be surprised by the inreased ʻimmoralʻ activities in the country. The same country where a mother gives birth infront of a hospital gate as our glorified waheshimiwas pass bills to approve monthly perks of 100,000 for their retired colleagues. The same country where gospel artistes pray that gay men descend on their enemies and rape them in broad daylight.

By now, you should be acquainted with the Shakilla story that has been the mainstay on our social media platforms for the last couple of days. If not, get a social life. Really.

I donʻt want to join the bandwagon of calling her names and hurling imprintable words at her cause methinks that is beside the point. Who knows? Maybe I have done worse its just that I havenʻt gotten a platform to let you all in to my secrets. Plus, I may not be that religious but I bet the Holy Book says something in the line of judging being a preserve for the Almighty and the Almighty alone.

Thing is, this is the society we live in. A society where women are objectified as sex tools. A society where young ladies sleep with old men to make ends meet. A society where ladies bleach their skins, go for boobs and asses implants to be sexually appealing to the opposite gender that is way more than financially stable with an insatiable sexual appetite. Moral decadence or business opportunity ? You decide.

“Respect and love your hustle.” Thatʻs Shakillaʻs mantra daily. She is 19 years(you can add just 19), I canʻt really say she has experienced the tough and ugly side of unemployment yet but it is from her hustle, the one she wants people to respect, that she gets paid from and meet all her needs. However, imagine a 26 year old out here, who has walked into all the offices she can think of, dropped a million and one mails but still canʻt get a job that sits right with the morally uptight society because she doesnʻt have 10 years experience. Never mind she graduated the other day. But… but, she has that type of a figure that turns heads. A figure that a 62 year old would be willing to pay for just to peruse the heavenly anatomical features that come with the body. See ! I just objectified women. Sad.

The same same generation that raised us is the same same generation that is criticising us. The same generation that couldnʻt provide job opportunities or provide conducive environments for businesses to thrive in are now ranting on top of their voices,”Akii watoto wa siku hizi.” Listen, I am not supporting what Shakilla does(especially with the remote), she clearly needs help. All I am saying is, maybe she didnʻt have any other option to make money, and she really needed it, and decided to throw morality and whatever the society thinks to the gutter.

Our minds are so used to sexual innuendos that one canʻt say I want stick in reference to butter or Chuma ya Doshi in reference to iron sheets without one quickly thinking about sex. I ask again, moral decadence or a business opportunity ? Shakilla and the many other Shakillas out here get paid because they identified their niche in the sexual insatiability of men, and ladies alike. Its paying them. More than the delayed Kazi Mtaani/Vijana slaries will ever pay them. Or maybe an office job. “Respect my hustle.”

That said, that doesnʻt mean just because life is hard and we keep on electing leaders who do us no good, you should go about hawking your body to the highest bidder. Behave!

I said I wonʻt judge the many Shakillas we have around. But let me say this, her behaviour is not one Iʻd like to see in my sisters or my future wife and more importantly my future daughter(s) if Iʻll be blessed to have any. My point is, shunning her and calling her womanhood four times older than her is missing the point. Totally. Where are her parents ? Why did she decide to get into this high-end, for lack of a better word, prostitution ? At such a young age ? Does she intend to quit at some point to concentrate on what we the judging society want ?

Shakilla isnʻt the problem. And if she is, only partly. After a few weeks, tutakuwa tumemsahau. She is just an eye-opener to societal ills in this country. Stop the pretence and fight the problem, not the messengers. Ni hayo tu.

HOW MENSTRUATION AFFECTS PROFESSIONAL SPORTSWOMEN.

By Martin Moses,

More often than not, you will hear ladies saying that it is that time of the month. Again. It is a period characterized by hormonal fluctuations that come with nausea, dizziness and muscle cramps. And from observation, muscle cramps tend to be excruciatingly painful where in dire cases, it leaves the victim rolling on the floor with pain.
Today being the 28th day of May, we mark the Menstrual Hygiene Day to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management. It is a topic that many still find embarrassing to talk about openly but it has become imperative given the effects periods have on professional sportswomen. Just how does it affect them and how do they cope with it.

How serious is it ?
Approximately 75% of athletes experience the negative side effects of menstruation which hampers their training programs. The aforementioned hormonal fluctuations come with laxity in ligaments, high rates of metabolism, inflammation and high injury risk. Estrogen, the primary hormone that repairs and thickens the uterus lining during menstruation can increase the elasticity of joints. This often leads to anterior cruciate ligament injuries that occur if the knee or the lower leg is twisted. The ACL is the most serious kind of knee damage and sadly, it is more prevalent in female athletes than their male counterparts.
Increased rates of breathing and high body temperatures during the luteal phase of the cycle makes it harder to run in the heat as sweating which is a means of cooling the body is only achieved at an extremely high temperature. It also means that less oxygen is available for the muscles involved in exercise yet more oxygen is required by the muscles responsible for breathing.
Other side effects such as fatigue and bloating may be hard to measure and directly link them to performance levels but it goes without saying that they do affect the normal workability of a female athlete.
Given that the subject is still considered a taboo, few are the athletes who have come out to discuss it openly. Former World Marathon record holder, Paula Radcliffe admitted to running the final third of a race with severe cramps but wouldn’t let it be a hindrance. Annabel Croft, a former tennis player, said that women do suffer in silence and it affects them in a big way.
The situation isn’t made easy with the rules of some games. Take for example the white jerseys of tennis or the tight trousers of horse riding which leaves the participants uneasy in the event of, for lack of a better word, leaking.

Is there a way out ?
So, how can this natural phenomenon be mitigated? Is there a way to help out these sportswomen to undertake their training regimes or even competitions peacefully? Oral contraceptive pills and injections are usually taken to either control or stop them completely. The catch, however, is that some of these pills contain substances that are banned since they are considered performance enhancing.
Beyond any reasonable doubt, menstruation is a limitation that exists in sports and there is growing need to open a worldwide debate on how to combat this. Let us normalize menstruation. It is okay to be a woman. Let us talk about it. We shouldn’t discriminate women for choosing not to get pregnant.

Football remembers

By Martin Moses,

@_martinmoses

Prior to that penalty shootout, Stoppila Sunzu was just another centre back plying his trade for TP Mazembe. But now, after the Gervinho miss, he had a chance to gift Zambia her first ever Africa Cup of Nations title against the star studded Ivory coast team led by Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and the likes.

Turmoil of thoughts
Sunzu walked past Gervinho who kept changing in between looking up in the air and covering his face with his shirt. Myriad of thoughts must have passed through Sunzuʻs mind. Will I waste my teamʻs chance the same way Rainford Kalaba did after Kolo Toure had his attempt parried away by Kennedy Mweene? He must have thought about Joseph Musonda who left the pitch in tears after just 11 minutes. He must have thought of how the Chipolopolo had uncharacteristically raided the Elephants line but had been kept at bay by Boubacar Barry. The same Barry he was up against for a chance at glory.

Zambian national football team Chipolopolo celebrate after winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.

Or better yet and most significantly, Sunzu thought of Kalusha Bwalya who was sitting pensively in the technical area. And by extension the great 1993 team of 18 players whose lives were cut short on the 27th day of April 1993 shortly after taking off from Libreville, the same town that Zambia and Ivory Coast had played out to a drab and dour draw leading to these penalties. The thought of paying tribute to the likes of Efford Chabala, John Soko, Moses Chikwalakwala and Patrick ʻBomberʻ Banda by winning an unprecedented AFCON title seemed like offering the greatest possible memorial.

Chipolopolo team of 1988

The team is to date considered the greatest Zambiaʻs football team having proved their mettle in the Seoul Olympic games of 1988 after beating Italy, you got that right, Italy 4-0. The Zambian Air Force DHC 5D Buffalo flight they were travelling in fell into the Atlantic Ocean some 500 metres off the shore of Libreville, Gabon. They were buried just outside the Independence stadium in Lusaka in the Heroes Acre. But for Kalusha, their captain, who had made different travel arrangements was here at the Stade dʻAngondje stadium just about to witness the most famous victory in the history of Zambian sports.
Sunzu duly converted to put to an end a poignant penalty shootout. And as it dawned on Didier Drogba that this was yet another near miss, Christopher Katongo led his players in embracing Kalusha, tears of joy flowing freely.
It is exactly 27 years today since that crash that shook Africa.

To our fallen heroes, football remembers, I remember.

ASSESSING CHELSEA’S TRANSFER OPTIONS

Mainstream media and social media alike have been awash with stories that Philippe Coutinho is set to return to the English Premier League. This time plying his trade with Chelsea. Having already finalised the transfer of Hakim Ziyech in principle, Frank Lampard seems to be cranking the pressure up to get timely acquisitions and bolster his squad if Chelsea is to compete for silverware during his tenure. Which got me thinking. Who does Chelsea really, and I mean really, need? I am a keyboard Chelsea fan and this is what I make of Chelseaʻs squad at the moment.

The arrival of the Wizard of Amsterdam
With Willian and Pedro almost certain to leave at the end of the season, Hakimʻs transfer is a thoughtful one. Beyond any reasonable doubt. The Magician or the Oz as he is fondly referred to can cut in from the right or play as an auxillary number 10. But Frank would be wise to use him primarily on the flanks having seen how devastating he can be against top European sides.

Coutinho? Expensive bargain or not
The rise of Mason Mount and the imminent return of Ruben Loftus Cheek will surely have Marina having second thoughts on drafting in Coutinho. We saw the Brazilianʻs best at Liverpool. He produced glimpses of his quality at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Is the one time hot prospect, now a reject worth a risk taking? Methinks yes. Play Coutinho behind a target man and give him an opportunity to roam freely in the final third. Something close to what Jurgen Klopp did. Should he be able to replicate his Anfield form at the Bridge, and at just 28 years, maybe, just maybe, Chelsea will finally find the missing cog in their attack.

The talent that is Jadon Sancho
Talking of attack. What about Jadon Sancho? The same Sancho who has registered 39 goal returns this season. The same Sancho who is being pursued heavily by European heavyweights but supposedly has a bond with Mount and Tammy Abraham. How will Lampard assemble a team having Pulisic, Odoi, Ziyech and Sancho? Who will play and who wonʻt?But first, my opinion, get Sancho and Coutinho if you can. Like yesterday !

Squad depth
For any team to be formidable on many fronts, you need an apt squad depth. The kind Zidane has at Real Madrid. Zidane nowadays has the luxury of benching Marcelo and Luka Modric. The same way Pep would bench Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez in their title winning run last season. A squad that has a lot of world class players needs a coach who can keep everyone happy. Lampard has proven he can, he isnʻt rigid with his squad selections(frowns Sarri). You prove yourself, you get your chance.

Leading the line
Iʻd be brief on the striker part. Allow Batman to leave. Recommend him to the board to be a fulltime Twitter admin. Allow Big Oli to see out his career in MLS league, Vissel Kobe or wherever he deems fit. Then get Moussa dembele from Lyon to tell Tammy that hey, we really appreciate you coming in and breaking the number 9 curse, but we need more.
Jorginho, Kovacic , Kante and Billy Goatmour all remain. Imagine disagreeing.

Defensive options
Sell Emerson to Juventus. I am surprised they want young players this time round. Get Alex Sandro as part of that deal to be used in a 4-3-3 formation but listen to this, Marcos Alonso to be used in any formation that doesnʻt require him to do a lot of tracking back. Mans can be a secondary striker. Retain ball playing defenders; Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen. Tony Rudiger is gungho but he offers a different dimension to that defence, he remains. Iʻd chop Zouma in favour of an established centre back. Milan Skriniar please. Azpilicueta can remain for as long as he wants. We already have his position covered in Recce James.
I can hear you mumbling what about Ben Chilwell. Stop that nonsense, please.
Kepa? Top young keeper. With a lot of potential. My first choice every day, anyday and twice when we are playing Liverpool.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a squad that can fill up your trophy cabinet.
You can now bring in your rebuttals.

Josep Bartomeu is what Barcelona is suffering from

Josep Maria Bartomeu is a man under siege. Having taken the reigns from Sandro Rosell on January 23rd 2014, things have gotten pretty thick for the head honcho at Barcelona. The pendulum has swung and Barcelona is quickly losing its charisma. The same charisma it used to stride with on the European football terrain.

Neymar saga

So, why is it widely believed that the 57-year old is just moments away from a panolada. The waving of white handkerchiefs at Camp Nou is dreadful and embarrassing. Allowing Neymar to leave for Paris Saint Germain didn’t go down well with the Blaugrana faithful. Of course who would have wanted to come up against the MSN attacking trident. But, they allowed that that to pass. It is the failure to get him back last summer despite the incessant pleas of the Brazilian superstar to come back, that drew the real ire of the supporters. He even offered to pay 20% of his transfer fees. Why would anyone overlook a chance to get a replacement for Lionel Messi who is on the homestretch of his glorious career? Any takers?

Poor transfer policies

Then in comes the issue of expensive failed transfers. Bartomeu made a killing from Neymar move. A classic Jeff Bezos. But the proceeds, sadly, have failed to live up to the expectations. Phillippe Coutinho, Aleix Vidal, Ousmane Dembele, Boateng (my God) and I am tempted to add Antoinne Griezmann to this list. Why would such world class players at their former clubs fail to replicate their performance at Europe’s biggest stadium? Barca have struggled to replace their golden era players: Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez and Andreas Iniesta. What makes you think they will do a better job in replacing the Argentine stalwart in 2,3 years? Which begs the question, is it the system, is it the coaches?

Death of the Johan Cruyff football

Bartomeu has worked with 3 coaches, 2 of which never played to the philosophy of the club. Because folks you see at Barcelona, it is not always about the trophies but what kind of football you play. Explains why Pep was such a darling in the Barcelona streets. They call it mes que un club (more than a club). Luis Enrique can be pardoned because at least his methods worked. But what about the disjointed second leg performances at Roma and Liverpool that his successor faced? Valverde employed a defensive approach which delivered on good days and failed on days that results were needed most. And Bartomeu still came out to defend him before bowing to pressure after the Spanish Super Cup. Shameless. I won’t really want to rope in Quique Setien into this conversation. I will shield him under the pretext of he still hasn’t gotten his foot on the pedal to be judged plus how do you expect someone to perform with just 16 senior players? There is a wide belief that he is the guy to bring back the Johan Cruyff football back to Camp Nou.

La Masia Academy

Talking of senior players, when was the last time you heard of a successful graduate from La Masia? La Masia used to be an academy to reckon with. That is if we choose to ignore the services Southampton has religiously given Liverpool over the years. Carles Alena, Alex Collado, Rique Puig and Asumanne Fati are hanging on the whims of a breakthrough, showing glimpses of talent but no structure to let them up. Why? Cause their boss prefers to bring in overrated…never mind.
Boardroom squabbles
One also can’t help but wonder how Eric Abidal was allowed to go on record and viciously accuse the players for not giving their all provoking a response from the ever silent Messi. What about the accusations and subsequent ramifications of hiring the 13 Venture social media company to work up the image of Bartomeu and at the same time smear its senior players in bad light?

What next Barcelona?

Listen, I am not preempting anything. Elections are due next year. Before that Napoli would probably be waiting if UEFA gives a go ahead for the conclusion of the Champions League. Need I say Napoli is the only team to beat European champions Liverpool twice in as many years? Need I remind you they have eliminated Lazio and Inter Milan from Coppa Italia and beaten Italy’s finest Juventus? Tell me they won’t be relishing a chance to pile further misery on Barca. Tell me Bartomeu won’t be forced to take a bow if Napoli does the unthinkable. They have the greek god Manolas remember.
Let’s face it, Bartomeu is sabotaging Barcelona. Not the coaches, not the players. From where I stand, Barcelona is a club trying to re-inflate its diminished ego.
It is just a matter of when, not if.

WHY CHELSEA WON’T FINISH IN THE TOP FOUR THIS SEASON

By Martin Moses.

Frank Lampard is man under siege.

He cut a frustrated figure when asked whether Chelsea intended to push through and get some new names before the impending closure of the transfer window. The decision to rescind Chelseaʻs transfer ban by the Court of Arbitration had been met with a lot of hope from the Blue faithful that Lampard may be able to get some quality additions in January. And rightly so, the rumours began. Chelsea were linked to English sensation Jadon Sancho whom its said they were willing to pay the asking price of $100 million to lure him out of Signal Iduna Park. Chelsea pondered whether to activate Nathan Akeʻs buy back clause or move in for Wilfried Zaha. They asked whether RB Leipzig would let go of Timo Werner before romanticizing Krzysztof Piatek who eventually went to Hertha Berlin. Imagine.

As Lampard fielded questions prior to that game against Leicester, he confirmed that not even Dries Mertens will be joining the London-based club. Letʻs face it, Chelsea is precariously hanging by a thread in fourth position with tell-it-all signs that qualifying for the lucrative Champions League next season would be a tall order.

Lampard came in with the inexperienced tag on his back. Got his footing after three gameweeks and turned his young prospects into a formidable side. This went on for a few weeks before finally falling to the leagueʻs defending champions Manchester City. Then came in the inconsistencies. It will be safe to say that Chelsea hasnʻt registered a comfortable victory save for the back to back London Derby victories which showed grit, resilience and desire to fight.

Learn to give credit where its due. Lampard seems to have broken the number 9 hodoo at Chelsea through Tammy Abraham. Thirteen Premier League goals and counting without a single penalty on his full debut season is no mean fete. The rebirth of Mateo Kovacic who looked lost under former manager Maurizio Sarri is another thing that Lampard deserves props for. Plus the opportunities academy products have been accorded in the first team : Recce James, the recently departed Tariq Lamptey, Marc Guehi and Billy Gilmour.

But; here is why Chelseaʻs lack of business spells doom on its chances for qualification. I am a Chelsea fan, sadly, and Iʻm going to put this bluntly, Chelsea wonʻt finish in the top four. Unless of course some drastic changes have taken place. Kepa Arrizabalagaʻs recent howlers have done much to convince a lot of people that he shouldnʻt be Chelseaʻs first choice goalkeeper. The worldʻs most expensive custodian has let in cheap goals that has cost Chelsea valuable points. In fact, he sits last in save percentage in the Premier League this season having only saved 55% of the shots he has faced. Problem is, his back up is Willy Caballero, a 38 year old who for lack of a better term, Iʻd call an improved version of Loris Karius. Remember the 2018 World Cup when he gifted Ante Rebic a goal as Croatia ripped Argentina apart ? Say no more.
In Kepaʻs defence, his backline hasnʻt been stout either. Actually, Lampard has fumbled with his selection juggling between Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen. Since making his comeback from injury, Antonio Rudiger seems to be the only permanent figure in the CB pairing but I have a problem with his gungho style of defense which doesnʻt befit a top club with a different style of play. But that is a story for another day. Azpilicueta has been shifted back to his natural left back position to accomodate the rising Recce James whose crosses have been something akin to what TAA does for Liverpool. This has been made easy by poor displays from Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri who have done little to convince Lampard and Jody Morris why they should be accorded a starting berth.

At the centre of the cog, Lampard doesnʻt seem to know when to play 2 midfielders, 3 midfielders , in what capacity and who ahead of the other. Forget Jorginhoʻs underwhelming start to EPL life last season, he is a pass master. Play goes through him as he dictates it. One of the best in the trade, only second to Sergio Busquests. I have already talked of Mateo Kovacic. His ability to drive the ball forward and pick out runs of players is indispensable. Walks in NʻGolo Kante. Arguably Chelseaʻs highest rated player after Hazardʻs exit last year. One can argue that Kante has become obsolete to Chelseaʻs demands and you wonʻt be able to offer a substantial rebuttal. He is being played out of position and looks lost most of the times but what do we say about class? Itʻs permanent. And that is Lampardʻs headache.

Upfront Lampard is spoilt for options but in his array of options, breaking down teams that have been set up defensively has been a challenge. Cristian Pulisic has been racking up goals and assists, so has Mason Mount and Willian. And like the rest of the departments, inconsistency has been the major undoing. Why should a top six club fail to kill the opponent despite having numerous chances to do so.

After 25 games,Chelsea has lost 8 times. The same number of times Maurizio Sarri lost the whole of last season enroute to finishing number three. Is it a case of being over-confident in Lampardʻs abilities, lack of qualified and proper players, the pressure of being a top six club or just a blatant disregard of the clubʻs hierachy to back its manager ?

Sitiing four points behind, Tottenham has bolstered its ranks effectively. Drafting in Steven Bergwijn, Gedson Fernandes and making Lo Celsoʻs move permanent should make Jose Mourinho forget about Christian Eriksen and give him the impetus to fight for a top four finish or even silverware, Harry Kaneʻs injury notwithstanding.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaerʻs Manchester United finally had their man in Bruno Fernandes and got Odion Ighalo on loan to cover for the impressive Marcus Rashford. OGS has survived calls for him to face the chop. Knows when to win to save his job. Picture this, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominnay returning to team up with Bruno who hit insane numbers in the Portuguese Primera Liga. Itʻs just a matter of if the combination can tick and trust you me if that if becomes a reality, I donʻt see anything stopping the Red Devils from returning to the elite competition.

Arsenal being Arsenal brought in Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari to work their leaky defence. Mikel Arteta seems to have a vision but whatʻs vision without results. How he intends to turn them into serious contenders remains to be seen especially with his key players dip in form.

I wonʻt even mention the upstarts in Sheffield United, Wolverhampton Wanders and Evertonʻs resurgence under Carlo Ancelloti who want a place at the big boys table.
Lampard needs a working formula and he needs it fast. The next four weeks will determine where Chelsea finish the season as he faces European powerhouses in quick succession. Talk of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspurs, Bayern Munich home and away, Liverpool and the rest.

He should get solace from the return of Ruben Loftus-Cheek who will be like a new signing but after such a serious injury we donʻt know which RLC is coming back. Is it the same RLC who terrorised defences at will last season or the RLC whose perfomances were so pathetic that he had to be shipped to Crystal Palace on loan ? What will Lampard do with the senior players in the squad and get the best out of them? How will he be able to get 3 points from Chelseaʻs bogey teams consistently? And get them comfortably the way a top club needs to ?
How ?

Thing is, Chelsea only looks better because it’s rivals are dropping points at the same rate as they are. But on a closer introspection and from where I stand, Chelseaʻs problems seem to be more deep rooted.

Because for now, top four seems to be escaping the grasp of the Roman Abramovich owned club.
